Choosing the right supplierIt's probably never been more difficult to choose a supplier as the internet is overflowing with companies offering great deals. Where do you start? If you prefer to leave artwork and typesetting in the hands of professionals, then a bespoke service may be better for your needs. It's an interesting fact, but you'd be surprised at how many so-called 'professional-designers' haven't got a clue when it comes to designing for print. Many immediately set out and design some wonderful stuff, in 4 colours (CMYK), without realising the cost implications for their client. Most print companies have at some time, had to 'redo' the designer's artwork into something that costs far less to produce. I am not setting out to knock designers, far from it, as there are some very talented guys, and gals out there who understand the client's needs and design to suit. The ones I do have an issue with are the ones (normally self-taught) who've strayed from web design into print and very often lead the client up the proverbial garden path as, in many cases they are not quite sure what they are doing. So, in choosing your supplier there is a lot of choice out there, but it would be wise to try and use one of the larger companies, as quality control will be taken quite seriously, whereas the smaller operator doesn't normally have the time or resources to devote to this important aspect. Having said that, I've seen some printed material from a larger supplier that leaves a lot to be desired, so it's not always plain sailing, even with the big boys. Choose carefully - do you want automation, or a personal service? what can go wrong? . . .
