Thermo Business Cards (Thermography)Thermographed business cards are still quite popular but, as with other specialist cards, do cost more to produce. Thermographed business cards are produced by printing the card in the normal way and while the ink is still wet, a special powder is sprayed onto the card which sticks to the wet ink. The process is completed by running each card through an ultra-violet 'curer' which bakes the powder/ink part of the thermo card. Done correctly, the final effect can be very attractive. Done badly, the effect can look horrendous! Things to consider before sending your artwork to a printer. If designing your own card try and steer away from any type that is very small, or thin. On small type, the thermo process can easily fill-in gaps between characters. Thermo cannot be applied to tints and these would need to be printed separately, which may also affect the cost. Example
If in any doubt about your artwork, it is definitely worthwhile speaking to your printer beforehand, who will be able to advise what will and won't work. Previously-printed samples are a must before committing your artwork to a printer you haven't worked with before. If you normally purchase your business cards in a hurry, then thermographed business cards may not be for you, as you do normally have to allow extra time to get them produced, so best to check timescales with your print shop first.
